FAQ on Still Images

1. Why am I getting poor image quality in the Ear Works?
The still images are mostly captured from the old Auditory Tour. They are in good quality. However if you suffer from poor image quality, we recommend you increase the color density to thousands. Thus, You should get a decent image quality on screen. However, we also found if you set the color density too high, some other problems might occur in playing Quicktime movies.
2. How could I get a better viewing quality on figures in Course Book?
You can not make it any better unless we have better quality figures available. The original scanned images are in TIFF format. They are big and in poor quality. I have tried all the ways I know to convert them into GIF, but non of them looks good. Any suggestion to get a high quality images are welcomed. Thank you in advance. I hope there are good quality and visible figures available soon.
3. How can I capture the images on you web pages?
Under Netscape, you can point on top of the image you want and hold your mouse button on Mac or the right mouse button on PC. You will see a Netscape command menu with one item saying "save this image as ". This will allow you to save the image to your local storage.

FAQ on Quicktime Movies

1. What player do I need to play the animations on your web?
All the animations on our homepage are in Apple Quicktime format. You will need Quicktime movie player to play those movies. You can FTP them from Apple's ftp site to get the proper player for windows 3.x or Window 95. If you are using Mac, the system should come with a Quicktime movie player. If you run an older Mac, there might not have a quick time player included. You can ftp one from Apple's ftp site.

We also find that the old Quicktime player such as version 1.x for windows has problem playing our Quicktime movies. If you have problem playing our Quicktime movies, Apple's Quicktime player for windows 2.0.3 was tested and can play all of our movies. You can ftp one copy from here.

2. Why do I get ghost images while playing those movies?
We found a case under PowerMac 7100 in which system cannot update screen in time. We fixed that problem by reducing the color density of monitor from millions to thousands. If you still have the same problem, try 256 colors.
3. I could play your Quicktime movies before, why am I getting a "Cannot open xxxx.mov" error now?
We found this happened under Windows 3.x. You can try to reboot your system and download our movies again.

FAQ on Browsers

1. What browser should I use to browse your homepage?
Since Our homepage is enhanced by Netscape Frameset, Javascript, and HTML 3.0 client-end imagemap, the best browser to use is Netscape's Client Navigator 2.0 or above. There are a lot of browsers and I am not able to test all of them, therefore, I could not tell if your browsers will work or not.

FAQ Misc.

1. Why I get the network connection closed error when I submit my answers for practice questions ?
The CGI (Common Gateway Interface) programs used in hearing and balance homepage were written in Perl and located on another web server. Unfortunately, the web server (NCSA HTTPD 1.4.2) is on a Linux box that shares a Pentium 100 PC with DOS/Windows. Sometimes, the machine needs to be switched to DOS mode. In that case, you lost those CGI accesses from that server. I am working on porting those Perl scripts onto current web server on VAX.

Note: The same problem will occur when you use Form-Email to Instructors and Auditory Quiz.
