The auditory process consists of the following basic stages:
i. Outer/middle-ear low and high frequency attenuation;
ii. Basilar membrane filtering; and
iii. Mechanical to neural transduction.
These processes occur in the auditory periphery, which converts analogue sounds entering the system into digital signals which are then processed by the brain.
